Director Giulia Romano (she/her) is a performer, creator, writer, and educator based in amiskwacîwâskahikan (colonially known as Edmonton). She is a graduate of the University of Alberta, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and a Bachelor of Education, and is currently an MFA Directing candidate at the University of Alberta.
Giulia’s work is rooted in a deep affinity for new play development, classical texts, mythic tragedy, devised creation, and movement-driven performance. These interests shape a practice grounded in collaborative, physically engaged processes that prioritize discovery, rigor, and shared authorship.
At the centre of her practice is a belief in theatre as a communal act. She approaches directing not as an authoritarian role, but as one grounded in collaboration, care, and service. Her work prioritizes relationship-building—between artists, between bodies, and between story and audience—fostering spaces rooted in trust, play, and rigor. Through this, she creates spaces where vulnerability can emerge and the work can breathe.
Giulia understands directing as a profound act of service: a way to uplift voices, foster dialogue, and give back to the community through the stories we choose to tell. For her, the stage is not simply a site of performance, but a vessel for collective reflection, transformation, and responsibility.
In addition to her work as a director, Giulia is deeply involved in theatre administration, having collaborated with organizations such as Theatre Network, Common Ground Arts Society (Found Festival), Opera NUOVA, and ABBEDAM Productions.
Offstage, she finds joy in gardening, writing music, and cruising around the city with her loved ones—singing her favourite tunes at the top of her lungs.
